A Funny Obsession With Ice Cream

If you visited The Little Yellow Corner Store before, you might know that ice cream is one of the most celebrated desserts.  Cold and creamy ice cream is often served in one form or another for dessert throughout the entire year and irregardless of the current icy temperatures we have outside.  Whether it is an ice cream cone or pie a la mode, scoops of ice cream manages to find its way to the table for a scrumptious dessert.

Let us begin by mentioning the reason for this post on an ice cream obsession with first a look at the cute quilted ice cream balls recently made from scraps of fabric and adorned with pastel colored ice cream buttons.  The fabric remnants which would have stayed in storage for months to come are now playful balls that are used as colorful decorative fillers for bowls or apothecary jars.  These charming balls inspired The Little Yellow Corner Store to revisit the collection of previous ice cream posts over the years.

These multi-colored ice cream balls are like the plaid/tartan quilted balls in the last post, Having a Big Heart for Plaid and a Valentine's Day Tablescape Blog Hop.  They are fun to make and are simple and easy.  If you missed the plaid/tartan quilted balls blog post and the link to the website for instructions, you can find it at:  https://thelittleyellowcornerstore.blogspot.com/2022/01/having-big-heart-for-plaid-and.html.

The following two photos are of the printed fabric scraps which were used for the quilt balls.

From the many yards of this playful material, I had sewn several decorative pieces for my son and daughter.  First I made two table runners and two decorative toss pillows for my son and his fiancee.  The colorful print seems to coordinate well with their two canvas paintings, one of their cat, Kala and another of a lion whose photo was taken on their safari trip in Kenya.  These bold paintings were created by a local artist and they hang in their apartment for a bright and cheerful addition to their living room.

For my daughter, the quilted ball fabric was also used for two decorative toss pillows but trimmed in a light turquoise color.

The versatile colored feather print seemed to coordinate well with the colorful alpaca fabric  that I purchased for a crib sheet and a teal-colored flannel fabric that I also purchased for a receiving blanket for my grandson when he was born in August.

So to use up the remainder of the fabric, the scraps were used for quilted decorative balls beautifully displayed in a teal colored dish lined with pink fabric.

As my project came to an end and I embellished the quilted balls with ice cream buttons, I had the idea to revisit some of the previous ice cream posts here at The Little Yellow Corner Store.  Since ice cream is a summer time treat for some (and for others, like myself, it is a year round pleasure),  the cool, creamy sweet dessert makes everyone happy.  So lets visit the collection of ice cream photos and photos related to ice cream for a bit of jovial fun.

Lets begin with some homemade ice cream sandwiches from a early blog post.  They are as pretty as they are delicious.  Rich and with plenty of chocolate flavor.

How about a fast and easy decorative ice cream sandwich on a stick made by cutting out a fun shape with a cookie cutter like flip flop sandals from a store purchased ice cream sandwich.  (However, you need to decide who will get to eat the remnant pieces of the sandwich.  Yum!)

On some occasions when the weather is very hot, a tart lemon-basil sorbet works wonders to cool off too.

When the house is filled with children, a fruity Jello/Kool Aid popsicle is the perfect refreshment for all of the outdoor play.  They are always a winner in any flavor.

A simple scoop or two of vanilla ice cream with some colorful sprinkles is more satisfying than a complex dessert loaded with many ingredients.

Or it could be a dessert which is not technically ice cream, but is something related to it.  For example, a decorated cupcake placed into an ice cream cone to make it look exactly like a soft serve ice cream cone.

Anyone care for a slice of cake in the shape of a strawberry and chocolate flavored ice cream cone?

A gooey, chewy Rice Krispie Treat in the shape of a vanilla ice cream bar on a stick is a favorite treat for children and adults alike.

And then there are the vividly colored sugar cookies with glitter covered frosting/icing and festive sprinkles.  They are so delicious and they are always a favorite among friends and family.

And then there is my favorite recipe for ice cream....."magic" hard shell chocolate sauce.  This sauce hardens on the cold and creamy scoop of ice cream and can also be decorated for a rich two-in-one dessert.....ice cream and smooth chocolate.

For the recipe to make this awesome chocolate sauce, visit:

Lastly, there is also ice cream related decor.  Although it is not edible, it certainly inspires anyone who loves ice cream to run out to get some.

First there is tissue paper/Kleenex ice cream sundaes.

An ice cream cone folded napkin?

A tuile pom pom cone.

And, for some fun .......faux ice cream made into vanilla sundaes with sprinkles and a cherry.

Hard to believe it is artificial, right?  (But do not eat it.)  If you would like the recipe for making this faux ice cream for decorative use only, you can visit my blog post, Faux Ice Cream at:  https://thelittleyellowcornerstore.blogspot.com/2018/01/faux-ice-cream.html.

Ice Cream even became a themed tablescape entry in the Art of Tablesetting Exhibit in October 2018 at the Rahr Art Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Can you say that I enjoy having fun with ice cream?  It just may be a delightful obsession you might like to try too!
