Having a "Tin" of a Good Time Christmas Decorating

Just about this time of year, a lot of us begin to think about and plan for the upcoming Christmas holiday for our celebrations with family, friends, neighbors or just about everyone.  For some decorators, like me, decorating is even a little earlier because of my work at the Rahr Art Museum for their exhibit, Christmas in the Mansion.  You might agree that a good starting point to most holiday decorating is what theme would be used and the needed supplies for it.  Like me, you might go through your bins of Christmas collections and give thought to using these supplies in a new way.  As I went through my items this year, I came across some cute decorative metal tins that my sister gifted to me.  Once used as a container for cookies, candies, nuts or flowers, these now adorable metal containers lay empty, tossed into a box and forgotten.

It then struck me.  I was determined to bring new life to these cute and whimsical metal tins and set out to have a "tin"(ton) of a good time doing so. I began gathering up my greenery and some candy picks and decided to use all these finished containers as decorative pieces on a fireplace mantel among a lit (multi-colored) garland and ornaments, throughout the great room or outside on my vintage themed porch bench.  Each tin, a truck, a train engine, a trolley, a drum and two buildings are designed around a similar candy/toy land theme but each have a slight difference in details or items used.  In all, without their lids, these tins make a lovely and inexpensive center piece for Christmas decorating and take minutes to assemble. I hope you will agree they serve a much better purpose as an arrangement than when they were left sitting empty in a box waiting to once again be filled.  Perhaps it will inspire you, too, to repurpose forgotten pieces into something new and amazing .

Let's share the rescue and some of the love...........

  1. Very adorable, I love the use of anything vintage rather than the 'new' stuff! I even have a hard time passing up old beat up faded ones!
