A New Twist on Fall

It is amazing how quickly the summer has gone and now we are thinking of Fall.  At some point in everyone's life as it was for mine this summer, there were several weeks filled with some challenging times.  As my husband recovered from his surgery and we spent our time at home, I took the opportunity to continue some genealogical research on a family tree that was started many years ago by my son.  I can say that once I found my first ancestor who I didn't know existed or had the pleasure to meet, I was hooked on wanting to learn more.  So the rest of the summer was eagerly looking for more clues and more people.  I was able to find three of my grandmother's sisters I never knew she had and was able to locate her mother, which is my great-grandmother and her father, my great-grandfather.  How thrilling it was to learn of their immigration to the US in 1906 and to find their names on a passenger list of a ship which arrived in Maryland.  So as you can guess, my tablescapes were put aside as I "walked in the footsteps" of my ancestors as they made the decision and their way to the US.  

That being said, this year, The Little Yellow Corner Store wanted to add a twist to the colors of Fall.  I found some stunning fabric that contains the colors of Fall, such as brown, tan and burnt orange, but with a twist of olive green and light blue.  I found it to be an interesting combination of colors and one that was a bit different.  There was just enough of the fabric to make a table runner and a table topper.  

As I happened to be in Hobby Lobby a while back, I found that at the front of the store they had a display which contained the latest trend in decor items and color.  It was made up of items of olive green and burnt orange/terra cotta.  It was gorgeous.  So taking my idea from the display, I designed A New Twist on Fall tablescape around this popular mix of colors.  

What a beautiful combination of colors.  The hint of cornflower blue really makes the Fall colors stand out even more.

A simple centerpiece made up of Chinese lanterns and cat tails add a bright pop of color but doesn't take away from the pattern of the table runner.

White ceramic pumpkins and squirrels adorn the table with a bit of Fall whimsy and simplicity.

It was hard to choose which color tablecloth to complement the runner.  An olive green or brown would have worked beautifully with the runner, but I love the color of burnt orange.  There is something so warm and cozy about the color.

It is also that time of year to collect pinecones.   The raised pinecone dinnerware has the subtle details for Fall.  I love the delicate brown outline of the pinecones and needles around the rim of each plate.  

And there is even a twist on the Fall dessert, which is usually a pumpkin pie.  Instead, it is a Pumpkin Magic Cake this year.

Pumpkin Magic Cake

1 box of Yellow Cake mix with ingredients for make the cake

15 oz. pumpkin puree

12 oz. evaporated milk

2 eggs

1 box (3.5 oz) vanilla instant pudding

2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice (divided)

1 c cold milk

1 8oz. container of Cool Whip Whipped Topping

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease a 9x13 inch pan.  Prepare the cake according to the box instructions using eggs, oil and water.  Pour into prepared pan.

In a large bowl, blend pumpkin puree, eggs, evaporated milk and 1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice.  Gently pour over the cake batter.  Bake for 50-60 minutes.  Cool completely.

In a separate bowl, mix pudding mix, the remainder of the pumpkin spice, mix in milk and whipped topping.  Evenly spread over the cooled cake.
